Lipomas are fatty, benign tumors that are sometimes visible underneath the skin. Although lipomas can be removed by excision or by liposuction, this is often not necessary and is usually done only when the patient opts for surgery either because the lipoma is causing pain, or for cosmetic reasons. There are also holistic approaches to treating lipomas. Before opting to treat lipomas holistically, be sure to see your doctor to make sure that what appear to be lipomas are not in fact liposarcomas, which are cancerous.
Eliminate Chemical Intake
The accumulation of fatty tissues can sometimes be caused by the accumulation of chemicals that your body is not equipped to deal with, according to Christine Dennis, R.H., M.N.I.M.H., M.Sc. (herbal medicine). Reducing or eliminating the intake of such chemicals may reduce the size of existing lipomas and help to prevent the occurrence of new ones. To do so, avoid smoking, as well as eating foods with preservatives and artificial ingredients. You should also avoid washing with or otherwise applying to your skin body care products with unnatural and artificial ingredients.
Diet
Apart from avoiding foods with preservatives and chemicals, changing the types of foods that you eat may also reduce the size and prevalence of lipomas, Dennis notes. Foods such as red meat, dairy products, fatty foods and foods and drink containing caffeine should be avoided, as they are difficult for the body to fully digest and eliminate. Instead, your diet should be mainly comprised of fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts and whole grains, foods that the body easily processes.
Exercise
Regular exercise may help to reduce the size of existing lipomas and prevent others from forming. This is because exercise helps to stimulate the body and keep the endocrine system and other elimination systems healthy and in balance. A moderate exercise regimen will also help to boost your immune system, which is also helpful when you are trying to reduce the incidence and size of fatty tumors.
Herbs and Dietary Supplements
Bartram’s Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine recommends the use of cedar extract (Thuja occidentalis) to treat lipomas. This should be taken orally and applied topically to the affected area each day. Other recommended herbs include chickweed, which may be ingested in tea or applied topically. Some companies also sell medicinal and dietary supplements, such as bio-algae concentrates, which they recommend for the holistic treatment of lipomas.
