Every day, people go on detox diets to rid their bodies of toxins that build up due to unhealthy eating, illnesses, long-time drug use or environmental pollutants. Master Cleanse is a detox program designed to eliminate toxic buildup in the kidneys, liver and digestive system. Master Cleanse users report a variety of benefits achieved while using the system; however, help with menstrual irregularities is not one of them. Katherine Zeratsky nutritionist for MayoClinic.com, states that although detox diets are popular, they are not scientifically proven to work.
Identification
The Master Cleanse is one of many detox diets flourishing in popularity. A general search engine key word search reported that the term “Master Cleanse Diet” is searched more than 27, 000 times a month globally, but only 140 people a month inquire as to the diets menstruation benefits. The reason — the Master Cleanse is largely popular for its weight loss benefits.
How it Works
The diet consists of three phases: Ease-in, The Lemonade Diet and Ease-Out. The diet begins with you eliminating meat, dairy and processed foods from your diet. The next step includes the introduction of juice, soups and broths, while still leaving out meat-based foods and processed foods. The Master Cleanse site states that breaking down food into liquid helps nutrients absorb into your body quicker. After these steps are completed, you are requested to drink only fresh lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and pure water. The last stage of the diet consists of going over the previous steps in reverse. The effects of this diet are to cleanse toxins from your body, while reducing weight.
Irregular Menstrual Cycle
Irregular menstrual cycles are almost always caused by a hormonal imbalance. Medical conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine fibroids, perimenopause and ovarian cysts all cause the menstrual cycle to be irregular due to imbalances in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are responsible for regulating menstruation and ovulation. Medication, surgery or simple lifestyle changes are normally required to correct these medical conditions. Detox diets are not recommended as a treatment for irregular menstrual cycles.
Considerations
Your body needs a variety of nutrients to function properly, and detox diets such as the Master Cleanse promote the elimination of many of these nutrients. Irregular menstrual cycles can be the symptom of some health conditions that may be related to a lack of vitamins and minerals. Therefore it is important to consult with your physician if you have an irregular menstrual cycle.
