Smart Shopping for Tribulus

Tribulus is a herb that has been used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine for centuries. Tribulus comes from a family of plants that are native to areas such as Southern Europe, Southern Asia and throughout Africa. The plant has many common names such as Puncture Vine, Caltrop, Yellow Vine and Goathead.

Tribulus has been used in the Indian ayurveda practice but in most recent years has been promoted as a product to increase sex drive. Research has suggested that the plant extract slightly increases hormone levels. Tribulus is a popular remedy for infertility, erectile dysfunction and a low sex drive. It has also become popular to improve athletic performances in the past 10 years as well.

What to Look for

Tribulus may increase testosterone levels indirectly by raising blood levels of the luteinizing hormone (LH). LH is produced by the pituitary gland and helps regulating natural testosterone production and serum levels.

Tribulus is most often found in combination with other sex-enhancing herbs in various libido products. Tribulus is also sold by itself often in a dosage ranging from 250 to 750 mg. It is found in a variety of extract potencies.

Products containing tribulus are typically marketed to bodybuilders and athletes concerned with increasing muscle mass and strength. These products are typically combinations of ingredients which include tribulus and not the herb on its own.

Common Pitfalls

No significant adverse effects in humans were noted in the three tribulus studies that have been conducted. However, pregnant or lactating women should avoid this product, as should children, since it has the potential to significantly alter hormonal chemistry. Men with enlarged prostates should consult their physician before taking the herb.

People with hormone-dependent conditions, such as breast or prostate cancer, should not use tribulus.
