Amino nitrate supplements are reportedly effective in delivering amino acids to your muscles. Your muscles use the amino acids to repair themselves and increase their size. The nitrate part of the supplement aids in the absorption and transport of the amino acids. However, both parts of the supplement, the nitrate and the amino acids, are associated with numerous side effects.
Allergic Response
Rarely, you may experience an allergic response to one or more of the ingredients included within the amino nitrate supplement. Signs of an allergic side effect include itching, swelling of the tongue or face, skin redness and difficult breathing, Drugs.com explains. An allergic reaction is potentially fatal and requires medical attention. Talk to your doctor if you believe you experience any of these symptoms after taking an amino nitrate supplement.
Headache and Dizziness
Nitrates may cause you to develop mild to moderate headaches and dizziness, according to a study published in the September 2006 issue of “Expert Opinion on Drug Safety.” Headache is the most common side effect associated with nitrates, with up to 82 percent of patients complaining of headaches. These side effects rarely cause the patient long-term discomfort, but in around 10 percent of patients the symptoms are too severe to continue taking the nitrate.
Drop in Blood Pressure
Nitrates cause your vessels to dilate, which may lead to a drop in blood pressure, Kaiser Permanente warns. This drop in blood pressure usually goes unnoticed, but may cause dizziness and fatigue. Furthermore, if you combine nitrate supplements with other vasodilators, like sildenafil, your blood pressure may drop precipitously and this can cause fainting, circulatory problems, coma and even death.
Side Effects on the Heart
Using amino nitrate supplements may increase the levels of nitric oxide in your body. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator, and in rare cases excess nitric oxide levels lead to decreased blood flow to the heart and, therefore, decreased oxygen to the heart. This can lead to damage of the heart muscles and, in severe cases, lead to a heart attack. Always consult your doctor before using amino nitrate supplements.
