Using Force Field Analysis to Lose Weight

Force field analysis is a cognitive and structured method for decision-making. Applying force field analysis to weight loss involves listing, discussing and evaluating the pros and cons of losing weight. Each factor listed is analyzed for its impact on the success of proposed weight loss for a given individual. When conducting force field analysis, the pros are called driving forces and the cons are called restraining forces.

Chart

A T-chart is a useful tool for force field analysis. To develop a T-chart, a sheet of paper is divided down the middle. One side is labeled "Driving Forces," and the other side is labeled "Restraining Forces." On the driving-forces side of the paper, every positive reason for losing weight is listed. On the restraining-forces side of the paper, everything that prevents or hinders weight loss is listed. Make certain to undergo a thorough physical by a medical doctor to determine any medical or physical conditions that need to be taken into consideration as pros or cons for your weight-loss goals.

Forces

Driving forces include such factors as health, beauty, increased ability to perform desired physical activities and available support systems. Restraining forces include lifestyle, food choices, time to exercise, motivation, willpower and the lack of available support systems. Each factor is assigned a value. For instance, using a scale of one to 10, with one being the lowest score and 10 being the highest score, each factor is evaluated for its potential impact on weight-loss goals. Scores are added for each column and compared.

Analysis

The overall score differential -- the difference between the driving-forces score and the restraining-forces score -- is a predictor of the success of a weight-loss goal. As an example, if the restraining-forces score is 30 and the driving-forces score is 50, then the odds are in the favor of losing weight. If the restraining-forces score is lower than the driving-forces score, this does not mean that weight loss is impossible. Instead, it implies that it will take greater effort to lose weight.

Strategies

Based upon the knowledge gained through force field analysis, strategies and tactics are developed to increase driving forces and decrease restraining forces. Strategies are highly individual and cannot be dictated by a family member or any other person. Even the advice of a doctor is rarely enough to motivate an individual to successful weight loss. The most anyone else can do, unless a treatable medical condition is present, is provide education, feedback and support.

Considerations

Success of the use of force field analysis for weight loss depends upon an understanding of the factors that contribute to weight loss, as well as to an understanding of your own inner motivations.
