A common skin condition, rosacea usually affects people over 30. Women are more likely to develop it than men, and the fair-skinned are most frequently affected. Though you cannot spread rosacea to another person or die from it, the condition causes a range of troubling symptoms. No cure exists, but you can include acupressure as part of your treatment plan.

Symptoms

Rosacea is marked by chronic inflammation and reddened skin. If you have this condition, you may note only redness on your face at first, but the discoloration eventually may spread to the chest, scalp and ears. In time, bumps may develop in the reddened areas and blood vessels may become visible. Your eyes also may appear bloodshot and develop a burning sensation. In addition, you may become flushed more than usual with this condition.

Treatment

Traditional treatments for rosacea include topical antibiotics, acids commonly used to fight acne and benzoyl peroxide. Oral antibiotics and a potent acne medication called isotretinoin may help, and laser surgery can prove helpful for the removal of visible blood vessels. You don't have to limit yourself to traditional treatments, however, and some people turn to alternative medicine techniques, including acupressure. With acupressure, a practitioner applies pressure to healing points on your body to stimulate the body to heal itself.

Healing Pathways

When using acupressure for rosacea, a practitioner massages pathways on the body referred to as meridian points. By applying steady pressure to a meridian, a practitioner sends energy to the area and promotes healing. An experienced acupressure practitioner determines the best meridian points to which to apply pressure based on an evaluation. However, the stomach meridian and points at the base of the skull and lower spine often are used for skin conditions. Additionally, several points on the face, near the eyes and nose, are helpful for the skin.

Emotional Freedom Technique

The Emotional Freedom Technique involves applying pressure to points on your head and body. By tapping your fingers on energy meridians while thinking about stresses you face and making positive statements, you can use kinetic energy -- energy of movement -- to promote a better mind and body balance. The restoration of this balance may promote healing and contribute to your overall health. Since some people have flareups of rosacea symptoms in relation to stress, the Emotional Freedom Technique may prove particularly helpful for preventing symptoms.
