Can Creatine Supplements & Citalopram Be Taken Together?

In supplemental form, creatine is typically used by athletes who want to improve their performance, but it may also be used to treat depression. Citalopram is a prescription antidepressant medication. Creatine supplements and citalopram are not known to interact with each other, but check with your doctor before you take them together. Both of these can interact with other medications, as well as cause dangerous side effects.

Interactions With Creatine Supplements

Creatine supplements can potentially cause harm to your kidneys, and when you combine them with certain other medications, you increase this risk. These medications include cyclosporine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and aminoglycosides, among others. Combining creatine supplements with caffeine, ephedra or both may increase your risk of serious side effects, including a stroke, and it may also reduce the efficacy of the supplements. Discuss any other medications and supplements with your doctor before consuming creatine.

Interactions With Citalopram

Citalopram should not be taken within four days of consuming a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, since you risk developing dangerously high blood pressure or seizures. Taking it with certain other medications or supplements may increase your risk of developing a condition called serotonin syndrome, and these substances include lithium, tryptophan and certain medications prescribed for pain. Additionally, citalopram may also interact with blood-thinning medications, other antidepressants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, sedatives, sleeping pills, medications used for migraines and tranquilizers. Tell your doctor about anything else you consume before taking citalopram.

Side Effects of Creatine Supplements

Anyone who takes creatine supplements should be under the strict and direct supervision of a licensed health care provider, since there is a limited amount of information on the side effects these supplements can produce. Some known side effects include stomach pains, diarrhea, nausea or a loss of appetite. You may also experience muscle cramps or even muscle breakdown, weight gain, heat intolerance, fever and electrolyte imbalances. Other reported side effects include increased thirst, headaches, anxiety, aggression, depression and dizziness. Let your doctor know about any adverse side effects you experience while on creatine supplements.

Side Effects of Citalopram

Common side effects of citalopram include drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, insomnia and decreased sexual interest. You may also experience diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, nervousness and muscle pain. Some of these side effects are similar to those produced by creatine supplements, so it is important to let your doctor know about other medications you are taking, since this will help him determine the cause of your symptoms. More serious side effects of citalopram include hallucinations, fever, confusion, muscle stiffness, a rapid heartbeat and seizures. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these.
