Located in Hillsborough, North Carolina, Kaye Products, Inc., specializes in manufacturing adaptive equipment. Its products are designed to help infants, children and young adults with mobility impairments. In addition to posture walkers, Kaye manufactures a pair of forearm supports in different sizes, which the company says offers several benefits to posture-walker users.
About Posture Walkers
A traditional walker is a walking frame about waist-high or with adjustable height. Its support bars are designed to be in front of the user as she pushes the walker to get from one place to another. A Kaye posture walker is designed with the support behind the individual. According to the manufacturer, that shape causes the user to stand more upright, improving her posture. It also helps her control motor coordination as she walks.
Shoulder Girdle Support
The shoulder girdle is made of the joints that connect a person's arms to her skeleton, giving them range of movement. If a mobility impairment causes a young person to lean on her arms while using a walker, Kaye forearm supports help to keep pressure off her shoulder joints, preventing stress injuries.
Arm Extension
Kaye forearm supports attach to the right and left grab bars of the posture walker, giving them extra height. The upward extension of the bars keeps the walker user from having to curve her back forward to hold onto them.
Sustained Grasp
Because of mobility impairment, a posture-walker user tends to put all her body weight on her arms as her hands hold the equipment’s grab bars. If the load is too heavy, she can lose her grasp. The forearm supports let the user bend her arms at the elbows at a 90-degree angle. In that position, her forearms rest on the support and the user experiences less strain.
