Acid indigestion can be an uncomfortable and disconcerting condition that can take the joy out of any meal. Meat marinades are often spicy or citrus-based and so can contribute to acid indigestion. Learn which flavorful ingredients make a good meat marinade without triggering your acid indigestion; that way you can satisfy your palate and look after your health.
Oils
Oils are an excellent choice for marinades, especially if you want to avoid acidic, greasy foods that exacerbate symptoms of acid indigestion. Whole Foods recommends flax, olive, peanut, toasted sesame or walnut oils as the top choices for creating marinades. These oils add a significant amount of healthy monounsaturated fat to your dietary intake as they add flavor to your meat, poultry or fish.
Herbs
Your spice cabinet may offer some delightful flavors to add to your meat marinade. Many fresh and dried herbs do not contribute to the painful reflux or heartburn associated with acid indigestion. Basil, rosemary, garlic, cilantro, parsley or even a preblended mix of herbs like Italian seasoning can add taste without consequence. Mix them with an oil to help pull even greater flavor from the herb. But be cautious when perusing the aisle of herbs and spices at your grocer – a spice rather than an herb can cause acid reflux.
Fruit and Vegetables
Do not underestimate the power of classic vegetables like onions and mushrooms or nonacidic fruits like red or green apples to tantalize your taste buds. Cook apples to extract flavorful juices, and mix with honey for a sweet marinade. Simmer onions and mushrooms in oil to create a healthy all-natural, antioxidant-rich marinade. Just cooking your meat in oil with fingerling potatoes may make your dish more delicious without contributing to the acid content.
Marinade Components to Avoid
If you have acid indigestion, there are certain foods that should definitely be avoided. When making your marinade, avoid foods that can increase acid production and exacerbate symptoms of acid indigestion and reflux. These can include tomatoes, black pepper, spices, citrus fruits, vinegar and vinaigrettes, alcohol and even chocolate. Coffee-based meat rubs are a bad idea if you suffer from acid indigestion, because high quantities of caffeine contribute to acid production. Tomatoes, citrus fruits, vinegars and vinaigrettes are highly acidic foods, while black pepper, spices and spicy peppers irritate the esophagus and stomach.
