Turon, occasionally called a banana fritter, is a traditional Filipino dessert made from bananas and jackfruit. This rich dessert is a perfect departure from more traditional desserts and only takes a few minutes to make. Jackfruit is often difficult to get in the United States, particularly if you don't live near a farmer's market. If you don't have jackfruit, you can leave this ingredient out and still create a delicious snack.

Preparing the Ingredients

Slice long, thin pieces of 1 to 2 bananas for each turon you want to make. Then slice a jackfruit into long slices. If you're not using jackfruit, try substituting dragonfruit, papaya or mango. Pile the fruits on top of one another, alternating 1 banana slice for 1 jackfruit slice. Then sprinkle approximately 1 teaspoon of brown sugar on the pile.

Wrapping the Turon

Lumpia are pastry wraps commonly used in Chinese spring rolls and other wrapped foods. They are available at many farmer's markets and ethnic food stores. Wrap the confection in a lumpia by rolling the lumpia around the banana and jackfruit and then pinching each end closed.

Cooking the Turon

Use a deep fryer to fry the turon in cooking oil. Turon is not a greasy dessert, so use cooking oil sparingly. Turn the turon frequently throughout the frying process to ensure an even texture.

Serving Suggestions

Turon is frequently served with vanilla ice cream. It can also be cut into small squares. Add a toothpick to these squares and serve as an hors d'oeuvre.
