Remedy for Red Bumps on Chest After Working Out

Having red bumps all over your chest after your aerobics class can be unsightly and uncomfortable. You might be able to take certain preventative measures to limit red bumps after exercise or you can treat them topically after your workout. If you notice frequent occurrences of red bumps no matter what you do, talk with your dermatologist. You might need a prescription topical cream or other type of treatment.

Causes

Heat rash can cause red bumps. Adults often suffer from heat rash where clothing rubs the skin or in folds in the skin. Wearing a tight shirt or sports bra might cause friction, leading to patches of red bumps on your chest. Women might develop heat rashes underneath or between the breasts after a vigorous workout. Red bumps might also be a sign of acne. Pimples form on your chest or other areas when excess oil clogs your pores. After exercise, your skin might be overly sweaty and oily, causing breakouts. Both heat rash and acne are treatable conditions of red bumps.

Heat Rash Remedies

Red bumps associated with heat rash might be firm or blister-like nodules filled with clear fluid. These bumps should go away on their own, but several remedies can help alleviate discomfort. Calamine lotion is one of the most frequently used remedies for heat rash. This soothing lotion helps minimize redness and itching. Anhydrous lanolin is another type of topical cream that might prevent ducts from blocking, according to the Mayo Clinic. Using this type of cream on your chest might stop new heat rashes from forming. In severe cases, your doctor can prescribe topical steroid lotions and creams to minimize swelling and red bumps.

Acne Remedies

Red bumps associated with acne might have white or black tips, or can be a solid red color. Pimples contain pus, clear liquid and could bleed if you squeeze them. Benzoyl peroxide is a type of compound found in acne soap bars, skin creams and body washes. It works by drying out pores, reducing oil production. Salicylic acid also acts like a drying agent by breaking down pimples. While many over-the-counter acne remedies contain one or both of these compounds, they can lead to excessive drying if you use too much. Opt for a mild body wash that contains the lowest amount of these agents. If you don't notice a reduction in red bumps after exercise, you might need to increase the strength or visit your dermatologist.

Prevention

If you are prone to red bumps each time you exercise, keep the area as dry as possible. Work out near a fan to keep air circulating around your body. Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that allows your skin to breath. Take off wet clothing immediately following a workout and take a shower to remove sweat and oil. Keeping the skin on your chest dry and cleaning the area right after you exercise might help prevent red bumps from forming.
