Ginseng and ginkgo are herbs used in alternative medicine. The name "ginseng" refers to more than one herb. However, panax, also known as Asian ginseng, is the most common type of ginseng. Hair loss is not a common side effect of ginseng or ginkgo biloba. In fact, panax ginseng might help promote hair growth.

Regeneration

Panax ginseng is used to improve concentration, memory and physical stamina. Reports of hair loss caused by panax ginseng use are lacking. It is used less commonly to stimulate hair growth in people with alopecia, a conditioned characterized by hair loss. An animal study published in the November 2011 issue of the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology," found that panax ginseng significantly stimulated hair regeneration. Researchers at the Department of Oriental Medical Food and Nutrition in Korea concluded that it might be beneficial in treating hair loss.

Circulation

Ginkgo biloba contains beneficial compounds called flavonoids. It is used to stimulate mental energy and concentration. Ginkgo biloba might improve circulation, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although clinical data are lacking, some people use ginkgo biloba to stimulate hair growth. Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow to the scalp, which promotes hair growth, according to Jeffrey Fisher, author of "Herbs for Hair Loss." Ginkgo biloba might help hair grow thicker also, says Fisher.

Rare Effects

Ginkgo biloba and ginseng are not known to cause hair loss. Clinical data showing that either herb might cause hair loss are lacking. However, it is possible. All herbs have the capacity to cause rare side effects. Discontinue use and talk to your physician if you suspect that ginkgo biloba or ginseng is causing your hair loss.

Considerations

The typical hair growth cycle lasts two to three years, after which your hair goes into a resting phase. During this phase, it is common to notice minor hair loss. If your hair loss is excessive there might be a more serious problem. Consulting your doctor is the only way to know what is causing your hair loss. A variety of conditions are associated with hair loss, such as hypothyroidism. This condition occurs when your thyroid is producing too little hormone.
