The Insanity workout is a home fitness program designed by Shaun T., a choreographer and fitness expert. The workout is a DVD-based home regimen that you perform daily. In return, Beachbody, the company that produces and distributes the Insanity workout DVDs, promises that you will lose weight and tone your entire body. As of fall 2011, the company is offering a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The Insanity workout website promises that you will transform your body in 60 days provided you follow the program correctly and complete one workout per day. The program combines a fitness test with nine workouts. Complete one DVD each week, following the sequence suggested by the Insanity workout program. These workouts combine cardio training with interval training and plyometric exercises. Examples of the workouts include "Cardio Power and Resistance," "Cardio Abs," "Max Interval Circuit" and "Plyometric Cardio Circuit."

Toning the Legs

The Insanity program will help you develop the trim, muscular legs you desire. Specifically, the second workout, "Plyometric Cardio Circuit" and the eighth workout, "Max Interval Plyo" are designed to tone and strengthen your lower body and legs. Some of the workouts for other weeks focus more on the upper body or the abs. As a result, you may wish to supplement your workouts with other lower-body exercises during these weeks to continue working on your legs.

Alternate Ways to Tone the Legs

Climbing stairs is one way to strengthen and tone your legs, either as a supplement to the Insanity workout or as part of your daily routine. Contrary to the myth that stairclimbing only builds bulky muscles in the legs, it tones the butt as well as the legs and builds lean muscle, according to Suzanne Schlosberg and Liz Neporent, authors of "Fitness for Dummies." Focus on activities that combine speed with resistance to build lean muscle, such as cycling or running.

The Importance of Diet

In addition to the Insanity workout plan, or any other fitness regimen you embark on to trim and tone your legs, you should eat a healthy diet. Eat a balanced diet and reduce your fat intake to maximize the effectiveness of the Insanity workout, because exercise alone may not be enough to help you lose weight. While exercise can help tighten your muscles, if your muscle tone is still masked by layers of fat, your legs will still have a bulky shape.
