Foot reflexology is an alternative-medicine treatment in which pressure is applied to areas of your foot. In reflexology, each area corresponds to a different body part. Applying pressure to specific parts of the foot is designed to stimulate healing in the corresponding body part. Wan Yang Health Products and Foot Reflexology is an established brand of reflexology with 15 locations throughout Singapore.
Background
The first Wan Yang foot reflexology center opened at the Upper Serangoon Shopping Center in the Hougang District of Singapore. The company focused on being a pioneer in foot reflexology in Singapore, according to its official website. The brand has grown quickly, opening a new branch every year since 1990. Wan Yang won the 2011 Asia Pacific Super Health Brand award from Global Business Media Group.
Technique
Wan Yang's foot reflexology technique differs from traditional reflexology. In traditional food reflexology, moderate to firm pressure is applied to the pressure points of your foot. Pressure point areas are typically tender to begin with, and you may experience soreness after a session. In Wan Yang reflexology, instead of pressing pressure points, practitioners apply gentle strokes to the area immediately surrounding the pressure point. This may stimulate healing in a more gentle manner, according to Barbara Kunz, co-author of "The Complete Guide to Foot Reflexology."
Training
After receiving their certificate in reflexology, Wan Yang reflexologists are required to undergo three to six months of specialized training. They are also required to take refresher courses and tests every three months. Wan Yang staff is tested on technical ability, customer service and health knowledge. According to the company's official website, it prides itself on the training of its staff.
What to Expect
Many American reflexology centers have borrowed the Wan Yang style of gentle stroke reflexology, Kunz explains. Unlike with traditional reflexology, you are instructed to inform your reflexologist if you experience any discomfort. The strokes are designed to be gentle, yet effective. A typical session lasts about 45 minutes. Depending on the ailment, you may require an average of six sessions. Many reflexologists who practice the Wan Yang style of foot reflexology prepare your feet by soaking them in warm water for about 10 minutes, according to Dwight Byers, author of "Better Health With Foot Reflexology."
