The Dr. Mom Diet is based on research performed by Colleen Trombley-VanHoogstraat, an author, public speaker and practicing chiropractor. Dr. Mom promotes balanced eating as a way to maintain optimal weight and health for you and your children. Trombley-VanHoogstraat is a practitioner of holistic and alternative practices that call for a diet based on whole foods with the least amount of processing and additives you can find.
Detox
Dr. Mom takes an alternative approach to health and weight loss. She promotes a diet that reduces the amount of candida or yeast in your body. Her diet relies on flooding the body with pure, whole foods and nutrients. Dr. Mom also suggests programs that detoxify the liver to help reduce weight problems to more manageable proportions. Dr. Mom tends to eschew the popular notions that whole grains and carbohydrate-laden meals are healthy and instead promotes heaping plates of fresh vegetables as a cure for obesity and the associated health risks it brings.
Inclusions
Dr. Mom likes to include food that relies on only one word to describe it such as apple, broccoli, soy, chicken and kale. Free-range hard-boiled eggs and fruit are a common fixture for breakfast on the Dr. Mom diet. While Dr. Mom does not exclude meat in her diet, she prefers patients eat only organic, free-range meat that has no added antibiotics, fillers or preservatives. Steak and eggs are allowed when you have the time. The diet includes a salad, at any meal, that’s filled with fresh, organic vegetables and topped with balsamic vinegar and olive oil every day. Snacks include nuts, cut vegetables, nut butters, pure water and hard-boiled eggs.
Exclusions
Like many other healthcare practitioners, Dr. Mom eschews the diet food promoted on grocery store shelves and recommends you eat only fresh, organic whole foods. According to the Mayo Clinic website, in addition to eliminating toxins by ensuring regular bowel movements, whole high-fiber foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that fight free radicals in your body. They provide you with sufficient vitamins and minerals to sustain a healthy weight and reduce your risk of disease. The Dr. Mom diet also reduces the amount of grains you consume and eliminates refined cereals. For your grains, The Dr. Mom diet recommends you eat gluten-free grains or sprouted ancient grains available in health food stores.
Associated Practices
In addition to promoting a healthy, whole-food approach to dieting, regular exercise is an integral part of the Dr. Mom diet. She insists patients participate in at least 10 to 20 minutes of high-intensity aerobic conditioning every day. Dr. Mom encourages you to get involved in high-energy sports that will hold your interest and increase endurance such as cycling, kayaking or running. According to Dr. Mom, stretching also is an important part of a daily healthy lifestyle routine. Stress reduction practices such as yoga or meditation and at least seven to eight hours of sleep a night round out the Dr. Mom diet formula.
