Toscanini’s -- a retail food establishment that specializes in ice creams, coffees, and teas -- won Boston Magazine’s 2009 Best of Boston award for best ice cream, and has received accolades from "The New York Times" and "People." Toscanini’s, which opened in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1981, also sells it ice cream in several New England stores, including Whole Foods and Formaggio’s Kitchen. According to Toscanini’s, its most popular ice cream flavor is Burnt Caramel.

About Ice Cream

Cream, milk and sugar are the primary ingredients for ice cream. The quality of the ice cream depends on the size of ice crystals formed during processing and the size of the air cells in the mixture. The goal is a smooth, creamy texture. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the most popular flavors are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, chocolate chip and butter pecan. The International Dairy Foods Association also reports that 1.52 billion gallons of ice cream were produced in 2009 and consumption averaged 12 quarts of regular ice cream and 5.2 quarts of low fat or nonfat ice cream per person.

Calories in Regular Ice Cream

Regular ice cream is made from high calorie ingredients, which results in a product with a high number of calories per serving. A serving of ice cream equals one-half cup or 4 ounces. On average, one serving of regular vanilla ice cream contains 145 calories. Most ice cream shops do not serve 4 ounce portions, so the calories per serving will increase based on portion size. If the ice cream contains other flavors or additions, such as pieces of candy or brownies, the calories per serving also will increase. If the ice cream is made with low fat or nonfat ingredients, the calories per serving will decrease.

Calories in Toscanini’s Ice Cream

Toscanini’s does not publish nutritional information on its website, nor is it included on the pints packaged for sale at other locations. Based on the ingredients, however, the calories in Toscanini's ice cream are likely similar to regular ice cream. For instance, the burnt caramel flavor includes cream, milk, sugar syrup, corn syrup, buttermilk powder, carob bean gum, guar gum, lecithin, carrageenan and sugar. These ingredients are the typical ice cream ingredients plus thickeners.

Ice Cream and a Healthy Diet

Ice cream can be part of a healthy diet. For most people, ice cream is a treat and is not a substantial part of their daily diet. As such, an occasional half-cup scoop of ice cream, equaling 145 calories or more based on the flavor, can be part of an overall healthy diet. The amount of calories in a serving of ice cream should only be a concern if the portion size is large or if ice cream becomes a frequent indulgence.
