What Are Striated Glutes?

Striated muscles, also known as voluntary muscles, are different from smooth muscles in that they appear to have a cross-stripped pattern of fine lines. Your gluteus maximus muscles are already striated in appearance; however, many bodybuilders and weight lifters want to lose enough fat to show off the striations. It is challenging to develop striated glutes and requires both diet and exercise.

Gluteus Maximus Identification

Three different muscles form to make your buttocks. The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle, often simply referred to as “glutes.” You use this muscle when you raise your leg up at the hip. This muscle also helps to rotate your thigh in instances when you're turning your foot or knee out. The gluteus maximus also works with other muscles to help you raise your leg. The other gluteus muscles include the gluteus medius muscle and the gluteus minimus muscle.

Striated Muscles

The human body has three different types of muscles: skeletal muscles, or striated muscles; cardiac muscles; and smooth muscles. Striated muscles are the most abundant tissue found in the human body, making up nearly 40 percent of the muscle system. Most striated muscles are skeletal muscles, which mean these muscles help to control movement. Cardiac muscles are also striated in appearance but their structure and function is different from skeletal muscles.

Obtaining Striated Glutes

Although your glutes are already striated, many bodybuilders refer to striated muscles as a highly defined body where the individual grooves of the muscle are apparent. The chest is the most common striated area because it generally doesn't have much fat. To achieve striated glutes, you need to have an extremely low body fat percentage. Along with diet, working out your gluteus maximus muscles will help the muscle grow.

Precautions

Consult your physician before you begin a weight lifting program or start a new diet. Striated glutes can be difficult to achieve and require a low percentage of body fat, which can affect your health. It's important that you continue to consume enough calories so that you have all of your essential nutrients and enough energy for daily functioning. Ensure that you drink enough water to stay hydrated, especially while working out. Dehydration can cause serious complications, including death.
