Carlsbad offers warm temperatures and stunning ocean views, but professionally managed races are the real lure for runners. This coastal California town north of San Diego holds a handful of running events each year that draw thousands of participants. With offerings running the gamut from short races for kids to a full marathon, you're sure to find a suitable event, particularly as all levels, from beginners to elite runners, are welcome.
5K
Many world records have been set at the Carlsbad 5000, a popular 5K race held in the spring. With seven different races, you don't have to be a record attempting athlete to participate. Timing is handled with RFID tags and cash prizes are awarded to top finishers. Categories include elite, masters and wheelchair events. All runners receive T-shirts and goodie bags.
10K
Every year in April Carlsbad plays host to the Earth Day 10K, a 6.2 mile themed race. Participants are asked to dress in green to honor the occasion, and in lieu of giving out T-shirts, organizers hand out tree planting kits to participants. The course starts at Cannon Park and runs along Coast Highway, offering picturesque ocean views. Cash prizes are awarded and everyone who finishes the race receives a biodegradable ribbon.
Half Marathon
The Carlsbad Marathon & Half was known as the San Diego Marathon until 2004, but it is still the same race that travels the streets of Carlsbad, and the half marathon is still run concurrently with the marathon. The 13.1 mile race is held in January. Awards are given out in 14 different age categories and special categories for active duty military participants. Elite athletes compete for cash prizes. A unique feature of the half marathon is pace groups who help you finish the race within a time target. You find the pace teams for different time goals in the morning before the race.
Marathon
The full marathon portion of the Carlsbad Marathon & Half begins early on a morning in January before the start of the half marathon. The time limit for the course is 6 hours and pace groups are available to help you stay on track. The timing tag for the race is disposable so you won't need to remember to turn it in after the race. Awards and cash prizes are available in several categories, from walkers to elite athletes.
For Kids
Associated with the Carlsbad Marathon & Half, the Kids Marathon Mile is held in January at LegoLand California. A non-competitive event for kids 12 and under, the race is not timed and everyone receives a medal.
A 1K Fun Run is held for kids in conjunction with the Earth Day 10K in April every year.
Held in the spring, Junior Carlsbad is a running event just for kids that welcomes ages 12 and under, all the way down to toddlers in diapers. Race lengths vary, depending on age, from a 25 yard dash to 1 mile. Every age is a separate group, and most races are timed. Every kid receives a T-shirt and medal.
