5 Things You Need to Know About Scuba Gear

1. The Essentials

There are a few essential things that every scuba diver will need. They are the mask, the regulator, the oxygen tank, the diver's vest and the fins. Divers wear the mask over the eyes, allowing him to see under the water. It also covers the nose. The regulator is the device used for breathing under the water and is worn directly between the diver's lips. The regulator connects to the oxygen tank. The oxygen passes through the regulator, allowing the diver to breathe under water. Finally, the diver's vest is an inflatable jacket that allows the diver to ascend and descend by inflating and deflating air from the jacket. Divers wear fins on the feet to help propel him through the water.

2. Gear for Cave Diving

Cave diving is an exciting type of scuba diving that requires special equipment. Just like on land, underwater caves are dark and cold. A cave diver would need a wet suit, a hood and boots, an underwater light and a diving knife. The wet suit, hood and boots help maintain the diver's body temperature in colder waters and help prevent hypothermia. It will also protect the diver from possible bumps and scraps from hitting the walls of the cave. Many divers will wear an underwater light on their head so that they can see and have their hands free to explore. There is no light in underwater caves, so the light is essential. A diver may want an underwater knife to protect herself from predators and to be able to cut herself out of a tangled situation.

3. Underwater Communication

When you are scuba diving, it is important to be able to communicate with your partner while underwater. For this reason, underwater writing slates are available. The diver is able to write on one side of the slate with an underwater pen. On the back side of the slate is a chart of underwater sign language that is useful so if a diver forgets a sign, he can just check the back of the slate.

4. Making Memories

What you will see under the water is truly amazing. The ocean is full of beautiful colors and sea life. Many divers like to use an underwater camera to capture their diving memories. These cameras are expensive, but are great for taking some unique and beautiful pictures of all of the things you will see and experience under the water.

5. Extra Gear

There are many other things available for the scuba diver. For example, a dive watch is like a regular watch but is waterproof and can withstand water pressure. Floating dive flags indicating a diver's location in the water are also available. Other things to look for are gear hangers, snorkels, underwater tools, spear guns, and men's and women's apparel.
