Added sugars, as opposed to natural sugars (such as the lactose in milk or the fructose in fruit), provide no nutritional benefit other than calories. Candy, soft drinks, and desserts are major sources of added sugar in the diet. Excess sugar intake can lead to weight gain, diabetes, dental caries and other health problems. The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar intake to no more than 100 calories per day (about 6 teaspoons of sugar) for women and 150 calories per day (about 9 teaspoons) for men.

Moderation Is Key

Consuming added sugar in moderation is the key to staying healthy without completely depriving your sweet tooth. You can still include Pixy Stix and other candies in a healthy diet as long as the amount doesn't exceed the American Heart Association's recommended daily limit.
