Gluten allergy, also known as celiac disease, is not known to cause warts. However, the immune dysfunction associated with gluten allergy might make you more susceptible to warts. Symptoms of gluten allergy include diarrhea, weight loss and abdominal pain. Consult your physician if you suspect gluten is triggering an outbreak of warts.

Background

Gluten is a common protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is challenging to avoid since it is found in baked goods, pasta and a number of processed foods. In some people, gluten triggers an immune reaction, which can damage your intestinal lining. People with celiac disease tend to have other immune issues, according to the National Institutes of Health. A less-than-optimal immune system can increase your risk for viruses, such as the virus that causes warts.

Warts

Warts are growths on the skin caused by a common virus known as the human papillomavirus, or HPV for short. Warts can appear anywhere on your body, spread to other body parts and occur at any age. HPV is an opportunistic virus that spreads when your immune system is weakened. Having a gluten allergy means that your immune system isn't functioning properly, which makes you more vulnerable.

Diet

Avoid suspected allergens such as gluten, dairy and soy, if you have warts, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. People with gluten allergy are advised to follow a gluten-free diet. Avoiding gluten can help boost your immune system so that your body is better able to suppress HPV activity. Your healthcare provider can perform an allergy test to confirm that you have a gluten allergy and to determine whether or not you have other food sensitivities.

Considerations

The cause of celiac disease is unknown. Following a gluten-free diet is the only way to prevent potential immune-related damage. If you continue to experience warts, consult your doctor about available treatments. Therapies designed to boost your immune system are beneficial if you have immune problems. Interferon is a medication used to boost your body's immune reaction to warts, according to the UMMC. Avoid other substances that weaken your immune system, such as alcohol and tobacco.
