Hypothyroidism is a condition, normally associated with weight gain, in which your thyroid gland cannot produce sufficient levels of hormones to keep your body functioning properly. If you have hypothyroidism, you should follow your doctor's instructions for medication and a healthy diet. Ginger ale is not known to have any interactions with hypothyroidism but can contain high amounts of sugar; therefore, it should be consumed only in moderation.

Hypothyroidism

The hormones produced by your thyroid gland, located in your neck, are important for regulating your metabolism. Thyroid hormone levels need to be within a controlled range; high or low levels can contribute to disease. When your thyroid hormone levels are below a normal range, you are considered to have hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include unexplained weight gain, poor skin health, decreased senses of taste and smell, muscle pain, weakness, frequent illness, depression and constipation.

Ginger

Ginger may help reduce nausea, vomiting, dizziness and motion sickness, according to the National Institutes of Health. The amount of ginger in ginger ale is used primarily as a flavoring agent, although it may improve nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort, a potential symptom of hypothyroidism. There is insufficient evidence to determine whether ginger will aid or inhibit the treatment of hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism Diet

There is no specific diet that will improve thyroid function, according to Dr. Todd Nippoldt of the Mayo Clinic. However, if you have hypothyroidism, you should follow a healthful diet. Your thyroid replacement medication should be taken on an empty stomach. You should avoid processed and high-calorie foods, instead eating small, frequent meals of lean protein, whole grain, fruits and vegetables.

Ginger Ale

Ginger ale is a carbonated soda flavored using ginger. However, ginger ale may contain high amounts of sugar, and should only be consumed in moderation if dealing with hypothyroidism. Without adequate levels of thyroid hormones, your body is less able to deal with a large surge of sugar or other nutrients in your blood. Frequent consumption of high-sugar foods with hypothyroidism can lead to an increase in blood sugar, potentially contributing to the development of Type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
