By using some common household ingredients, you can create a natural, homemade remedy to care for your hair. Some ingredients, such as olive oil, can help to moisturize your hair. Your hair is made up primarily of protein, so foods high in protein, such as eggs and yogurt, help to replace lost nutrients.
Olive Oil
Olive oil helps to improve flexibility in your hair, according to Carol Firenze, author of “The Passionate Olive: 101 Things to Do with Olive Oil." A warm olive-oil conditioner reduces brittleness and dryness. Mix ¼ cup of virgin olive oil with ¼ cup of boiling water until blended. Once the olive oil and water have cooled, massage the mixture into your hair. Use a hair dryer to warm up your hair once the mixture has been applied. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave the olive oil on for 15 minutes. Wash your hair normally when finished.
Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar
Consider using baking soda to replace your shampoo. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Use the mixture like shampoo in the shower after you have wet your hair, massaging it into your scalp. Depending on your hair type, you may find that you need to add more baking soda or use less. Because baking soda contains a mild amount of alkaline, you may want to rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar to restore pH balance. Vinegar also helps with untangling and can replace conditioner.
Egg Yolks
You can use egg yolks as a shampoo. For a simple home recipe, mix 1 or 2 egg yolks, depending on the length of your hair with a small amount of shampoo. Wet your hair in the shower. Apply the egg yolk mixture to your hair. Comb the egg blend through your hair. Rinse your hair completely with warm water. Condition your hair as your normally would or use olive oil as a conditioner.
Yogurt
Yogurt contains lactic acid, which can help to strengthen and smooth your hair. Use plain, unsweetened yogurt for your hair mask. Whip yogurt in a bowl and apply to your scalp in sections. Once you have covered your scalp, brush the yogurt on the length of your remaining hair. Leave the yogurt on for 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. You can also combine yogurt with sweet almond oil to make your hair extra shiny.
