A croissant is a crescent-shaped roll whose flaky dough contains butter and yeast and is similar to puff pastry. Plain croissants and croissants with jam or chocolate are traditional components in French breakfasts, but in the U.S., they are increasingly common as the bread for sandwiches. A turkey and brie croissant is a rich and delicious lunch choice, but it is not a nutrient-dense choice.

Ingredients and Overall Nutrition

A turkey and brie croissant sandwich with a large croissant, 3 ounces of deli turkey breast and 2 ounces of brie cheese has 550 calories and 32 grams of protein, or 64 percent of the daily value for a healthy adult on a 2,000-calorie diet. It has 35 grams of total carbohydrates, including 2 grams of dietary fiber, or 8 percent of the daily value for this cholesterol-lowering nutrient. The nutrient content varies depending on the size of the sandwich and any additional toppings or fillings you add.

Saturated Fat and Cholesterol

The sandwich has 31 grams of total fat, or 48 percent of the daily value. It has 18 grams of saturated fat and 138 milligrams of cholesterol. Saturated fat and cholesterol from your diet raise levels of cholesterol in your blood. Healthy adults on a 2,000-calorie diet should get no more than 22 grams of saturated fat and 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day. Fatty meats and cheeses and butter are high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Sodium

A turkey and brie croissant sandwich has 1,718 milligrams of sodium, which can lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Healthy individuals should limit daily sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams per day, and individuals with hypertension should not have more than 1,500 milligrams per day. Breads, cheeses and processed meats are among the top sources of sodium in the diet of the average American.

Vitamins and Minerals

A turkey and brie croissant has 136 milligrams of calcium, or 14 percent of the daily value. Calcium is an essential nutrient for building and maintaining strong bones. The sandwich provides 3 milligrams of iron, or 17 percent of the daily value. Iron is necessary for preventing iron-deficiency anemia, and women of child-bearing age and children are at risk for inadequate iron intake, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The sandwich has 3 milligrams of zinc, or 20 percent of the daily value, 2 milligrams of niacin, or 10 percent of the daily value, and 127 micrograms of folate, or 32 percent of the daily value.
