Multiple weight dumbbells are dumbbells that can be modified to either add or remove weight from the dumbbell itself. This is ideal for individuals who want to constantly change weights during workouts but don't have the room for a complete dumbbell set in their house.

Assembly

Multiple weight dumbbells are used by adding or taking away weight plates that come with the dumbbells. To add weight, simply slide an additional weight plate onto one side of the dumbbell, screwing it or locking it into place, depending on the type of weight you purchased. Always add the same amount of weight to each side of the dumbbell to keep it balanced when working out. Another variation on adjustable dumbbells are selectorized dumbbells. Instead of screwing on and off different weight plates, selectorized dumbbells add and reduce weight simply by adjusting a pin that is secured to a weighted base that the dumbbells sit on.

Weight Variations

The weight variation and range with which your multiple weight dumbbell will move depends directly on your personal preference as well as the limits of the dumbbells you purchased. If you're looking for smaller dumbbells that won't get too heavy, certain adjustable dumbbells come in a five to 25 pound range. If you're looking to use your multiple weight dumbbells for heavy lifting and body building, other companies make multiple weight dumbbells that range from five to 75 pounds, changing in increments of 2.5-pound plates.

Dumbbell Exercises

Once you've properly adjusted the weight on your dumbbells, you can perform a series of basic and advanced arm exercises, depending on your current fitness and skill level. Dumbbell exercises range from basic curls to military presses. To perform a basic curl, stand up straight with your arms at your sides and knees slightly bent. From here, rotate your arms so that your palms are facing upwards, bending at the elbows and curling your hands up towards your shoulders. Slowly lower your arms back down, repeating this motion 10 times or until fatigued.

Caution

While multiple weight dumbbells can help you build muscle and improve your overall physique, it's important to use proper caution while adjusting and using your dumbbells. While adding and removing weight on your dumbbells, ensure that the weight plates or pin adjustments are secure on your dumbbells. Failure to do so may result in a plate slipping off, potentially causing harm to you or someone around you. If you're using a large amount of weight, have a spotter or trainer present to ensure both your safety and that you're using proper form.
