Baby wipes, also referred to as wet wipes, are pre-moistened pieces of cloth or paper that can be used to clean the sensitive skin of your child or to clean household items, such as cutting mats. Wet wipes are often moistened with a combination of water and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning purposes.
General Maintenance
The amount of cleaning solution on a baby wipe must be diluted enough to not cause harm or damage to the baby's skin. As a result, baby wipes should only be utilized for general cleaning and maintenance with respect to cutting boards and mats. As a result, if you notice visible dirt or stains on your mat, wipe vigorously with a baby wipe until the dirt is removed. If your baby wipes are made of paper, do not rub too hard. If you do, the paper will break down and get imbedded into your mat.
After Washing
In addition to using your baby wipes for general maintenance, you can also use them after you have done a full wash of your cutting mat. Start by rinsing your mat thoroughly with soap and water, allowing it to air dry or drying it with a towel. Once it is completely dry, take a baby wipe and rub it gently, taking off any excess dirt and grime without damaging the texture of the board itself. After allowing it to fully dry, you can reapply the adhesive that was originally found on the cutting mat.
Lint Roller Combination
If you are finding that baby wipes are not thorough enough to keep your cutting mats clean, adding a lint roller into the mix will help you remove excess dirt and particle matter that may stay stuck in the finer crevices of the cutting mats. Start by first applying a baby wipe to the mat itself, removing as much dirt and buildup as you can. Once this has dried, take your lint roller and rub firmly on the dry mat to get off any additional grime that may have stayed put.
Caution
While cleaning cutting mats with baby wipes will help keep them in good condition, it is important to use proper caution when using a cutting mat during any art or assembly project that may require a sharp knife or blade to execute. Despite this, cleaning your board thoroughly will help you reduce your chances of getting an infection or dirt in your cut if you do in fact cut yourself while using your cutting mat.
