Temazepam is a prescription drug and tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid. In many cases, taking a certain medication with a supplement increases the risk of negative side effects due to the interaction between the two. In other cases, one may reduce the effectiveness of the other. Taking tyrosine with temazepam may be safe for some people because the two substances serve different purposes. Talk with your doctor before using the two together.

Temazepam

Temazepam is a prescription medication that works to regulate the brain functions that control your sleep. Specifically, it helps you fall asleep and stay asleep if you have insomnia. Due to the ingredients in the medication, it can't be mixed with other sleep-inducing substances, including alcohol and other sleep aid pills. Tyrosine is a supplement, but isn’t traditionally used for sleep problems, making it safe to mix with temazepam in many cases.

Tyrosine

Tyrosine plays a role in many brain functions, such as the production of several chemicals, including epinephrine and norepinephrine. It is also important for neurotransmitters, which are needed for many bodily functions. A tyrosine deficiency is rare, but may appear with thyroid conditions. A study reported in the journal "Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine" in 1995 found that tyrosine may increase alertness in people who are sleep deprived. This makes it an option for people who are taking temazepam for insomnia. Some people taking temazepam report continued sleepiness upon waking. Tyrosine may counteract the effects of this during the day when you need to be awake.

Dosage

It is important to follow your doctor's recommendation and package directions regarding dosage for prescription medications and supplements, including temazepam and tyrosine, especially when combining the two. Take temazepam right before you want to go to sleep, as it may cause you to fall asleep very quickly. Tyrosine is absorbed more efficiently when taken about 30 minutes before a meal. Divide your daily dose into three portions and take one-third before breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Considerations

Studies are limited regarding the effectiveness of tyrosine for alertness, but may counteract the grogginess that some people experience during the day while taking temazepam. If tyrosine proves useful, avoid taking a dose close to the same time you take temazepam because it may reduce the sleep-inducing effects of the temazepam. Never mix the two without your doctor's supervision, even though indications of negative side effects aren't readily available. Temazepam may cause allergic reactions in some people and include symptoms like wheezing, rash, swelling and trouble breathing. Seek medical attention immediately if this occurs. Tyrosine is not recommended for people with thyroid disorders or those who are prone to migraines.
