Mircette (generic name: ethinyl estradiol and desogesterel) is a form of birth control used to prevent pregnancy. It is an oral contraceptive that thickens cervical mucus, thins the uterine lining and prevents ovulation. This contraceptive is provided in a 28-day package and should be taken as your doctor prescribes to avoid any harmful side effects.
Mild Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Mircette can cause such gastrointestinal disturbances as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and bloating. It can also cause appetite changes and subsequent changes in your weight.
Sometimes, Mircette can wreak havoc on your reproductive organs and cause vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, menstrual cycle irregularities and decreased libido. Other less-serious side effects include breast pain and swelling.
Mircette can also change your appearance and cause freckle formation, darkening of your face, hair loss or excessive hair growth.
In some cases, Mircette can cause an excruciating headache, dizziness or fatigue. These side effects are rather benign and shouldn't cause panic. However, notify your doctor so she can track your side effects.
Blood Clots and Heart Attack
According to the National Library of Medicine, Mircette can cause serious side side effects such as a blood clot and a heart attack. In fact, oral contraceptives like Mircette increase your risk of develop clots in many areas of your body, such as your legs (deep vein thrombosis), lungs (pulmonary embolism) and brain (stroke). You may experience leg or arm pain with a deep vein thrombosis. Trouble breathing and chest pain are typically indicative of pulmonary embolism. Stroke symptoms include sudden numbness on one side of your body, headaches, trouble speaking, trouble seeing and unsteadiness. When these clots develop in your coronary arteries, a heart attack occurs. Symptoms of a heart attack include crushing chest pain that radiates to your arm or neck, nausea and diaphoresis (sweating). According to the National Library of Medicine, you are three times more likely to develop blood clots when using such oral contraceptives as Mircette. You are two to six times more likely to develop a heart attack while taking Mircette. Call 911 if you have these symptoms, as they are all life-threatening.
Other Harmful Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Mircette can cause migraines, nausea, poor appetite, hypertension (high blood pressure) and dark urine. It can also cause jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin), which is usually a sign of liver problems. Mircette can also cause edema (swelling) of your hands and feet. It can affect your personality and cause sadness, hopelessness and isolation. Get immediate medical help if you suffer from these symptoms.
Other Concerns
Avoid Mircette if you have a history of thromboembolic (clotting) disorders, breast cancer, uterine cancer or liver problems, says the National Library of Medicine. Mircette can increase your risk of clotting and cancer recurrence.
Avoid Mircette use if you are a smoker older than 35. Smoking and Mircette increase your chances of developing heart problems and clotting problems.
Mircette can pass into breast milk and harm your unborn child. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant.
