Digoxin is a common medication used to treat congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Congestive heart failure is a condition that results in the heart becoming enlarged and unable to pump blood effectively to the body. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart beat that is usually asymptomatic. However, it can cause dizzy spells, loss of consciousness or blood clots that can cause a stroke. Although Digoxin is effective for treating symptoms, you must be aware of its side effects.
Cardiac Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Digoxin is safe when used at normal doses. Digoxin works by altering different electrolytes in the heart to increase the force of contraction and control irregular heartbeats. However, when blood levels are too high, Digoxin can over-correct electrolytes and cause an imbalance that results in an irregular rhythm or missed heartbeats. Therefore, Digoxin must be dosed appropriately. If you are not experiencing relief, or your symptoms are getting worse, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
The June 2008 issue of "Clinical Toxicology" states that gastrointestinal side effects occurred in 17.9 percent of patients participating in a clinical study. These side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. According to Drugs.com, other rare gastrointestinal effects include abdominal pain, intestinal ischemia and hemorrhagic necrosis. Tell your doctor if you are experiencing any of these side effects. Your doctor may be able to adjust to dosage to reduce these effects.
Interactions
Digoxin interacts with many medications and supplements that can affect the levels of Digoxin in your blood. These interactions can effect blood levels of Digoxin and result in over-correction of electrolytes, and an irregular rhythm or missed beat. According to Drugs.com, certain diuretics, calcium supplementation and antibiotics can cause increased levels of Digoxin. The April 2008 issue of "Therapeutic Drug Monitoring" found that St. John's Wort, an herbal supplement commonly used for depression, can significantly decrease the level of Digoxin in the blood. Always let you doctor know of any additional medication, vitamins and supplements that you are taking.
