The American Diabetes Association reports that there are currently millions of people who have Type 2 diabetes. This form of diabetes develops because the body does not make insulin that is necessary for the body to properly function. The main goal of treating Type 2 diabetes is to monitor and control blood sugar levels. Much of this can be accomplished by following a good diet. Exercise is equally helpful to a person trying to maintain sugar levels. Medications may be prescribed for some people to help control their blood sugar. Other people may choose to take an alternative route by taking herbs to help control their sugar levels.
Ginseng
Research that was presented in 2003 by the American Diabetes Association showed that American and Korean ginseng helped maintain glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Another advantage of American or Korean ginseng is it seemed to help control weight as it helps reduce appetite. Ginseng is best taken in a tincture or capsules for optimal performance.
Bitter Melon
The herb bitter melon is a traditional Chinese medicine that can help with Type 2 diabetes. A study completed at the Garvan Institute in 2003 was able to isolate four components from this bitter vegetable. These components apparently activate an enzyme called AMPK. This enzyme is a protein that can regulate metabolism and aid glucose uptake, helping it circulate into tissues in the body. Bitter melon can be purchased at health food stores in capsules.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon can increase insulin efficiency, thus helping to control glucose levels. In 2003, a study was completed at the Agricultural University in Pakistan, demonstrating that blood glucose levels dropped after ingesting cinnamon. The study, which was published in "Diabetes Care," also discovered that triglycerides and LDL cholesterol were lowered as well. Cinnamon can be purchased in capsules in most health food stores.
Other Helpful Herbs
There are a variety of others herbs that may benefit Type 2 diabetes. Onion and garlic have active ingredients that help lower blood sugar levels. Gymnema can help people who crave sweets and can aid in lowering blood sugars. Pterocarpus marsupium (Indian Kino Tree) can reduce glucose absorption and improve insulin.
