Omperazole is the technical name for Prilosec. Prilosec is a medication that can be used to treat indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. These medications work by directly preventing the mechanism that the stomach uses to make stomach acid. Omeprazole can be purchased over-the-counter and with a prescription.
Common Side Effects
Because omeprazole affects the gastrointestinal system and, in particular, the production of stomach acid, it can cause some side effects that relate to the gastrointestinal system and digestion. According to Drugs.com, these include nausea, vomiting and flatulence, as well as abdominal pain and belching. These side effects are due to impaired digestion as a result of low acid production. Omeprazole use can also cause a mild headache.
Although these side effects can be uncomfortable, they are not considered to be medically serious. Unless they persist for more than a few weeks or are causing you a lot of problems, you should continue to take omeprazole.
Allergic Side Effects
Because omeprazole is a foreign substance, it can be recognized by the body's immune system as such. If the immune system reacts against omperazole, it can cause certain symptoms of an allergic reaction. Mild allergic reactions can cause a rash or hives to develop in the patient, leading to red or itchy patches of skin. More advanced allergic reactions can cause certain parts of the body to swell, including the hands, feet, face, and tongue. Severe allergic reactions can cause swelling of the throat, making it hard to breathe or swallow as well as hoarseness and tightness in the chest. Allergic reactions can be life-threatening, so if you are taking omperazole and experience any signs of allergies you should stop taking the medications and contact your doctor.
Side Effects In Children
Omeprazole causes similar side effects when given to children (under the age of sixteen). However, according to Rxlist.com, there are some side effects that are much more prevalent in children taking omeprazole. These include respiratory problems (such as a cough, chest pain, wheezing).
These symptoms aren't life-threatening, but if your child develops them you should contact your pediatrician to see if there are other medications that should be used.
