5 Things You Need to Know About a Neck Lift

1. Combating Turkey Neck

After half a century, the skin on your face is going to begin to sag due to the effects of gravity. Exercise and diet can keep this unsightly phenomenon under control to some extent. Lose too much weight and you will create that turkey neck effect. A neck lift done surgically will tug that loose skin back up and give you a more youthful appearance. Of all the cosmetic surgery procedures, a neck lift is probably the least noticeable. People will notice how good you look, but won't be able to put their finger on why.

2. Fat Goes, too

When the loose skin is filled with excess fat, the proverbial second and third chins appear. Liposuction done during the neck lift can help relieve this build up. A small incision is made in your neck and a suction tube inserted to suck out the fat. A good surgeon will make the cut under your chin or somewhere it will not be seen, even during healing.

3. Cut and Pull Surgery

A cosmetic surgeon will create a slit, usually behind the ears, to pull the excess neck skin through. The ends are cut off and the incisions sewed up. Full anesthesia is required for a neck lift, so you must consider these health risks before you do the procedure. You will need to have someone take you home after plastic surgery or get the procedure done in a spa with an overnight room where a nurse can watch you. Scars from a neck lift are minimal because they are made behind the ear and in the hairline. Only your hairdresser should know for sure.

4. Recovering From the Neck Lift

After the heavy trauma that your neck goes through for the neck lift procedure, it's logical that it will be painful for at least a few weeks. Swelling and bruising last for about 10 days and can be covered with a scarf so that you can go out in public as soon as you feel well enough. When neck lifts are performed as part of a complete face lift, the bruising will be more dramatic and you may want to stay inside a little longer. You will experience a tightness, making turning your neck difficult, so driving is discouraged until your full range of motion returns.

5. Lasting Effects of the Procedure

A neck lift will last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. As you continue to age, the skin becomes even thinner and tends to sag; touch-ups may be required. Maintain your neck lift with diet and exercise. Stretch your neck daily with isometric moves. Look up to the ceiling and hold. Make tight, funny faces in the mirror and do like the starlets do and slap the underside of your chin with the back of your hand.
