Gastric Banding Information

Gastric banding is a common and less invasive surgical procedure used to manage morbid obesity, according to the Columbia University Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery. With gastric banding, you will lose weight and slow the digestive process.

Procedure

Your surgeon will make small incisions in your stomach and use laparoscopic equipment to attach an adjustable silicone band around your fundus (upper part of your stomach), according to the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center. This will tighten and slow food digestion.

Time Frame

According to the UCSD Medical Center, gastric banding can take about 40 minutes and you may only need four to seven days to recover.

Advantages

According to Columbia University Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery, the gastric band is removable and it does not change your stomach anatomy. Also, it doesn't affect your nutritional absorption.

Results

Gastric banding can help you lose 40 to 60 percent of your weight for a period of two years, says the Columbia University Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery.

Medical Problems

According to the UCSD Medical Center, people who receive the gastric banding procedure may have improvement in their diabetes, high blood pressure, acid reflux and sleep apnea conditions.
