1. Why Wrap-Around Shots Are Great
The wrap-around shot in hockey is one of the most difficult goals to score but one of the most exciting to watch. The wrap-around shot is so named because it occurs when a player behind the opposing team's net tries to wrap the puck around the side of the net to score. The player usually has to fight off several defenseman, retain control of the puck and get the puck past the goalie in one quick shot.
2. The Wrap-Around Offense
Offensive players love to use wrap-around shots to score quick goals and rattle the opposing goalie at the same time. Offensemen will often seem to be waiting behind the other team's net, but they're not wasting time; they're waiting for one of their teammates on offense to feed them the puck and distract the goalie on one side of the net so they can wrap around the other side and score. Offensemen who perform this feat have to be quick and have a long reach to score a goal on a wrap around shot.
3. The Wrap Around Every Defenseman Hates
Playing defense is all about stopping the other team's offense and helping stop scoring chances, including the dreaded wrap around shot. Defensemen have the difficult job of trying to stop a chance at a wrap around shot and staying out of the goalie's way at the same time. Play effective defense on a wrap around shot by watching players that like to wait around the net for the chance at a shot and checking them before they get around to the side of the net. If you can, stick check the opposing player's stick away from the puck and redirect the puck towards one of your teammates so it can be cleared out into the neutral zone.
4. Working Out The Wrap-Around Shot
Wrap-around shot coordination can be the key to a great game-winning goal. If you see a chance at a wrap-around shot, coordinate the play with another teammate so that the opposing team's defense will be distracted when you go in for your shot. Coordinating a wrap around shot when the other team is changing lines is another great tactic because it will mean fewer players around the net to help the goalie.
5. Scoring On A Wrap-Around
Wrap-around shot scoring is all about speed and hand-eye coordination. Keep your eye on the puck at all time and shield yourself from opposing players. Once you're around the front of the net and can maneuver the puck around the goal post, shoot the puck. Wrap around goals often come from rebounds after the goalie knocks it away once or twice, so keep chipping away at it and don't give up until play is stopped.
