5 Things You Need to Know About Fishing

1. Crappie Fishing

Crappie fishing may be done during the day or night using lightweight rod and reels. Jigs work well, but many people like live minnows for attracting crappie. Be careful when snagging a crappie, as these fish have soft mouths. Don't put much pressure while reeling a crappie in or you may lose it. These fish are attracted by light, so when fishing at night hang a lantern over the outside of your boat to light up the water. Or, use a 12-volt battery powered light that floats. The light also attracts bait fish called "shad," which, in turn, draw crappie into your area.

2. Pass the Bass

Not only are bass fun for catching, they're fun eating, too. Bass fishermen take their sport seriously, spending thousands of dollars on boats and fishing equipment. Some bass fishermen make their living fishing in bass tournaments. These fish are caught with bait-caster rod and reels, called open-face reels, that take lots of practice to master. The old faithful plastic worm works well catching bass. Plastic worms come in many sizes, shapes and colors, but the best artificial lures are top-water lures, popping jigs, medium-dive and deep-dive lures. Spinner baits that have a propeller on the front to attract bass are also popular.

3. Fish Off the Bank

Many old-timers prefer fishing off the bank with cane poles, which is quite a contrast to today's high-tech fishing equipment. Cheap rods and reels along with cheap bait such as pink worms and red wigglers are the bait of choice in these circles. These fishermen fish for food, not the sport. Fishing this way for years, they prove success doesn't always cost a lot of money--and the fishing is just as much fun!

4. Pay Lakes

In many areas of the country, there are "pay lakes" stocked several times a year. This is a good place for teaching beginners the sport of fishing. Pay lakes have loads of crappie, brim, bass or catfish for the catching. Pay lakes are great for a day of family fun, enjoying the outdoors and learning the sport of fishing. Many people find fishing a relaxing sport, and the cost for fishing pay lakes is minimal.

5. Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is an art in itself. It takes a special rod and reel. Using artificial flies as bait, you must learn the right techniques for fly fishing, which may be done on lakes, rivers or streams. The line floats on top of the water. You pull the line towards you with your hand not holding the rod, and this attracts the fish to you. Serious fly fishermen make their own artificial flies.
