5 Things You Need to Know About Changing a Hearing Aid Battery

1. Keep Your Hearing Aid High and Dry

Hearing aids today are much more user-friendly than they used to be. However, there are some things that you have to keep in mind if you want your hearing aids and your batteries to last a long time. Store hearing aid batteries in a place that is neither too hot nor too cold. Moisture is also bad for batteries, so make sure you store them in a dry place.

2. Tug on the Tab

Hearing aid batteries come in individual plastic holders and have a detachable tab. The tab is for you to hold onto when you are replacing the hearing aid battery. However, if you remove the tab ahead of time it will activate your battery, so leave it on until you are ready to insert it in your hearing aid. You can buy a tiny container to store one hearing aid that attaches to your key chain--just place the battery with the tab in this container.

3. Hearing Aid Batteries are Dangerous Litter

When your hearing aid beeps or it isn't working properly, remove the hearing aid and place it on a towel. Open the hearing aid battery compartment and remove the old battery. Be careful to dispose of the battery carefully, because if it is ingested it can be toxic for young children or pets. Hold onto the tab and place the new battery into the compartment, pulling up and removing the tab when the battery is in position. If you are out at a party or a restaurant when your battery runs out, use a paper towel in the rest room if you can.

4. Pleasant Dreams for You and Your Hearing Aid

Remove the battery from your hearing aid every evening and leave the battery compartment open. This will allow the compartment to thoroughly dry out. It will also prevent a leaking battery from damaging the hearing aid. Many people store their hearing aids in a special hearing aid case that removes moisture. This is especially helpful for people who live in areas where humidity is high.

5. Watch Those Sprays

Of course, everyone knows not to wear a hearing aid in a swimming pool or shower. But there are other sources of humidity that can ruin your hearing aid battery. For example, if your hair covers your ear, don't put your hearing aid in your ear until it is dry. Also, be careful when using hair spray and other liquids that can ruin your hearing aid battery.
