Natural Ingredients to Flush the Liver

The liver is a clearing house for all foods, medications, alcohol and toxins that enter the body. The liver's main function is to process and remove anything that would threaten the body with toxins or poison. It produces bile that is used by the gallbladder to aid in digestion of fatty acids and often stores a lot of "junk," becoming toxic and sick in the process. Cleansing herbs and other supplements help clear the liver of toxins, flushing them away through the body's elimination system, and encourage the liver to maintain its health to continue doing its job.

Olive Oil and Lemon Flush

There are a variety of effective olive oil and lemon juice flushes available for cleansing the liver and its associated organ, the gallbladder, according to Cure Zone. The flushes involve using large quantities of oil and lemon juice in a specific and detailed protocol which help to produce a large amount of bile, allegedly washing gall stones out of the gallbladder for elimination. Cure Zone explains, that more than one flush to fully cleanse the liver may be necessary over a period of time.

Yellow Dock Root

The herbal remedy yellow dock has been used for centuries as natural purifier for the body, helping to flush toxins and treat the liver, according to the Global Healing Center. One of yellow dock's actions is on the intestines, stimulating them to act more rapidly in the elimination of toxins to support the liver and prevent contamination. Yellow dock also helps to increase the flow of bile to assist in fatty acid digestion.

Burdock Root

Burdock root, another herbal remedy, assists the liver by helping to flush toxins which are released from the body through the skin, according to the Global Healing Center. The Herbal Legacy website mentions how burdock root can be used combined with yellow dock to cleanse the liver. It is best taken as a decoction, which is similar to a tea, only the herb is brewed in the pot of water as it simmers. Dosage varies, but it is recommended to try adding a spoonful of herb to a pot with 2 cups of boiling water and allow to steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink like tea. Add 1 tsp. of raw honey to sweeten.

Nux Vomica

The homeopathic remedy, Nux Vomica, is one of several remedies to use for a cleanse if you have liver problems, according to the book, "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines." Nux Vomica generally helps people who have used a lot of alcohol or drugs, including prescription medicine, or are prone to over eating. It is useful for people with indigestion accompanied by bloating, belching and acid reflux. There may be diarrhea with severe abdominal cramping and the liver may be tender and sensitive to touch upon being palpated. Due to the individual nature of prescribing homeopathic remedies, there is no generally recommended dose. Speak to a homeopath or health care practitioner familiar with the use of this remedy for suggestions for dosing. Nux Vomica can be purchased in a health food store or from a homeopathic practitioner.
