Acai berry comes from a palm tree found in the tropical regions of Central and South America. Used for hundreds of years by natives, it has recently become popular in North America and Europe because of its health benefits. Some herbalists and supplement manufacturers advertise acai berry extract as a powerful antioxidant and weight loss product.
Acai Berry: A Super-food
Scientists have discovered that acai berries are truly a nutrient-packed super-food. According to Dr. Paul Gross, author and former research scholar for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the berries are rich in several vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc, as well as B1 and vitamin E. It is also high in protein and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Hunger cravings are like messages from the brain that the body requires some form of nourishment. Because of its nutritional content, and high-calorie low-sugar combination, acai berries are an excellent way to satisfy that need. They can be purchased frozen and added to salads, smoothies, cereal and yogurt.
Antioxidant and Cleansing Effects
A study cited by Science Daily reported that acai berries are powerful antioxidants, and are readily absorbed into the bloodstream. They may also increase energy levels and strengthen the immune system. While there are no current studies which show acai to have any specific weight-loss abilities, antioxidant-rich foods like acai have a cleansing effect on the digestive tract. Keeping the digestive system regular is an important element in losing weight and maintaining good health. However, many acai supplements touted for their cleansing effects also contain laxatives or other purgatives. Use fresh or frozen acai berries or pure acai extract.
High in Fiber
A serving of acai berries can contain anywhere from 25.2 to 44.2g of dietary fiber, more than the minimum daily requirements for adults. Fiber provides bulk in the intestinal tract, and can help you feel fuller longer. In addition, fiber helps to lower cholesterol and cleanse the digestive system. The American Heart Association recommends eating foods that are high in fiber to help lower cholesterol and maintain a healthy weight.
Precautions
Although acai berries are gaining in popularity, and do have some potential health benefits, they are not a magic bullet for weight loss. Safe, permanent weight loss is the result of balanced diet and regular exercise. Acai should be used in conjunction with and not in place of a healthy weight loss program. Additionally, some may experience allergic reactions to acai. Always consult your physician or healthcare practitioner before trying acai weight loss supplements.
