Hydrochlorothiazide is a commonly used diuretic for the treatment of chronic conditions such as hypertension and mild congestive heart failure. This drug acts at the distal tubule of the kidneys where it blocks the re-absorption of sodium, allowing for a decrease in cardiac output. Hydrochlorothiazide is typically well-tolerated and is good option for hypertensive patients due to its low cost, effectiveness and proven benefits in reducing the risk of stroke and cardiac events, according to Leonard S. Lilly, M.D. author of Pathophysiology of Heart Disease.
Common Side Effects
As with any medication it will take your body time to adjust. Hydrochlorothiazide is a lower-dosage drug and usually involves minor side effects, such as constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of appetite or nausea. Contact your physician immediately if these symptoms remain persistent or worsen over time please.
Potential Adverse Effects
Potential adverse effects are very serious uncommon conditions that may develop over time with the usage of hydrochlorothiazide. They include hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperuricemia, hyperglycemia and hypomagnesemia
Hypokalemia is a condition in which blood potassium levels are lower than normal. Hypokalemia may develop when taking diuretics due to an increase in sodium delivery to the renal tubules. Hypokalemia can cause abnormal heart rhythms, constipation, fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle spasm or paralysis.
Hyponatremia is a metabolic condition in which there is a reduced amount of sodium in the body fluids. Hyponatremia can develop with prolonged usage of hydrochlorothiazide due excessive fluid excretions containing sodium. Hyponatremia can cause a distorted mental state, convulsions, fatigue, headache, irritability, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting.
Hyperuricemia is a condition in which there is an abnormally high amount of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is an organic compound that contains carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen. Hyperuricemia can develop with diuretic usage if the clearance of uric acid is reduced.
Hyperglycemia occurs when there is an increase in glucose (sugar) in the blood. Hyperglycemia can develop with the usage of a diuretic if insulin release or usage is impaired. Symptoms of hyperglycemia include increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, headaches or fatigue.
Hypomagnesemia is an electrolyte disturbance, where there is an abnormally low level of magnesium in the blood. Hypomagnesemia can cause a reduced appetite, weight loss, muscle pain, irritability, disorientation, confusion, seizures, hallucinations or irregular heartbeat.
Allergic Reaction Symptoms
A rash or persistently itchy feeling may mean you are allergic to this medication. Look out for other allergic reaction symptoms, such as swelling, severe dizziness or troubled breathing.
