Diarrhea could be considered a defense mechanism, as it is a sign that your body is ridding its system of something it does not need. Diarrhea is no fun and can cause stomach cramping, upset stomach and dehydration. In the past, doctors prescribed something right away if a person had diarrhea; now doctors know and understand that it is actually best to try and let it run its course. Because diarrhea can be uncomfortable and cause dehydration, you can action to help bouts of diarrhea end quicker. One such action is to avoid certain foods.
High-Fiber Foods
Foods that are high in fiber can be very good for you. They are packed with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that we need to stay healthy. However, high-fiber foods, such as beans, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, cabbage, peas and bran should be avoided if you have diarrhea. Foods that are rich in fiber can make bowels loose and can actually aggravate an attack of diarrhea.
Dairy Products
Dairy products tend to produce watery stools and, therefore, it is best to avoid eating these foods during an outbreak of diarrhea. Many people are lactose-intolerant, which means they have a difficult time digesting certain dairy products. The foods that should be avoided include milk, cheese, ice cream and butter.
Fatty Foods
It is important to avoid fatty foods when you are experiencing diarrhea. Fatty foods can actually be the cause of diarrhea. Foods that are fried or have gravy or creams can cause your intestines to become blocked, which, in turn, prevents the excreta from leaving the body. Avoiding greasy and fatty foods can help you decrease the chance of having recurring episodes of diarrhea.
Other Foods
Products that are pasteurized should be avoided as they could possibly contain bad bacteria. Caffeine products, such as coffee, tea and soda, should also be avoided. This is because caffeine is a stimulant and can create an inadequate absorption of fluid, which can produce diarrhea. Avoid artificial sweeteners as well. Some of these sweet products have laxative-like effects on the digestive system. Finally, because alcohol can cause dehydration, alcohol should be avoided when experiencing diarrhea.
