Cefpodoxime proxetil, also known as Vantin and Orelox, is a form of antibiotic used for the treatment of infections caused by certain microorganisms like streptococcus. According to Drugs.com, such infections can include pharyngitis, tonsillitis or streptococcus pneumoniae. These infections are caused by bacterium and may be resistant to other forms of antibiotics. As with any medication, cefpodoxime proxetil has the risk of side effects.
More Common Side Effects
The most common side effects with the use of cefpodoxime proxetil, as reported by Drugs.com, include blackened stools, tarry stools, pain in the chest, chills, cough, fever, painful urination, trouble urinating, shortness of breath, sore throat, sores on the lips or mouth, ulcers or white lesions on the lips or in the mouth, swollen glands, unusual bleeding, unusual bruising or unusual fatigue.
Less Common or Rare Side Effects
Drugs.com warns users to report other rare side effects to a doctor including stomach cramps, abdominal pain, tenderness in the abdomen, severe diarrhea that is watery or bloody, skin peeling or seizures. Serious allergic reaction is also possible and signs of this include hives, welts, itching of the skin, redness of the skin or skin rash. Some patients may have a reaction at the site of the injection which includes tenderness, pain, redness or swelling.
After Effects
Once the medication has been discontinued a patient may still experience residual side effects. Drugs.com suggests these may include blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin. RxList.com also suggests individuals may experience minimal urine production, loss of hearing, pain in the joints, appetite changes, nausea, vomiting, redness of the eyes, eye irritation, trouble breathing or jaundice.
