A UTI, or urinary tract infection, can happen to both men and women, regardless of age. For men, the infection is often more severe. A UTI in a man can easily move to the prostate, which lies close to the urinary tract. It can also affect the testicles, since the urinary tract serves as the path for sperm to leave the testes during ejaculation. The signs of a UTI in a man can vary with each individual; some men may report no signs or symptoms.
Frequent Urge to Urinate
Although the bladder may not be full, the constant urge to urinate is a common symptom of a UTI. It is not uncommon for a man to urinate only a small amount, yet still feel as if his bladder is full.
Painful/Burning Feeling
Pain during urination or ejaculation can be a sign of a UTI in a man. The urinary tract becomes inflamed and irritated with a UTI, and any fluid passing over the inflamed area triggers pain. The acid associated with urine may cause a burning sensation when a man urinates. To combat the pain, he should drink high amounts of water to keep his urine diluted.
Fullness in the Rectum
Men often feel a fullness in the rectum during a UTI. This is due to the location of the bladder, as well as the prostate gland, in a man.
Changes in Urine Color
During a UTI, a man's urine may appear milky or cloudy. It can also appear a reddish tint, similar to blood. Drinking plenty of water will help dilute the urine and bring back a normal color.
