Tendinitis occurs when the tissues that attach muscles to the bones become inflamed or irritated. The Mayo Clinic says this condition causes pain and tenderness just beside the joint. It can occur in areas including the elbow, shoulder, knee or ankle. Severe tendinitis can lead to the rupture of a tendon that may require surgical repair. Symptoms of ankle tendinitis are similar to any other form of the inflammation.
Pain
Pain from ankle tendinitis often begins mildly and increases with activity. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, pain from ankle tendinitis can be localized or spread along the tendon that can lasts for several hours after activity. This pain can range from mild to severe. Tissues may be tender to the touch a few inches above where the inflamed tissues attach to the bone.
Swelling and Stiffness
Tendinitis is the result of swelling, but the exterior tissues may show signs as well. This can be seen with redness of the skin, warmth or puffiness.
Other Symptoms
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests other symptoms, including a noticeable sense of sluggishness in the leg or stiffness that improves as the tendon warms up.
