Common Side Effects of Dilantin

Dilantin is the brand name of the drug phenytoin, an anti-epileptic medication. According to Drugs.com, Dilantin is used to slow the activity in the brain that triggers seizures. Not all types of seizures can be controlled with this medication. Most people tolerate the medication very well, according to eMedTV, but Dilantin does have the risk of side effects. The most common are mild, but others may require medical attention.

Most Common Side Effects

The most commonly occurring side effects of Dilantin require no treatment unless they are overly bothersome or persistent. They include unusual eye movements, muscle coordination problems, slurred speech and confusion.

Mild Side Effects

In addition to the common side effects, eMedTV lists several other possible side effects that are not considered serious. These include dizziness, insomnia, nervousness, twitching, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, fuller lips, gum problems or excessive body or facial hair.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are not as likely to occur as the more mild effects. Any serious side effects of Dilantin should be reported to a medical professional right away. The most common serious effects may include unusual facial or body movements, increased seizures, abnormal behavior or thoughts, and unexplainable sensations, such as tingling or numbness. A spike in blood sugar may be attributed to the use of this medication.
