Shaving or removing hair consistently on the face, underarms or legs is done daily by many women. Laser hair removal allows women to undergo a painless procedure that permanently removes hair in unsightly or stubborn areas. The procedure is done by a licensed professional, and it can build confidence in women who have hair in places like the chin, upper lip or arms.
Procedure
Laser hair removal treatment is a procedure that uses a weak laser that passes through the skin and affects the hair follicle. The laser is attracted by the pigment of the hair. The hair follicle is the place where hair grows. The effects of the laser as it moves down to the hair follicle leads to the inhibition of hair growth. The procedure is painless, and according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the process does not require anesthesia.
Results
Ninety percent of patients see satisfying, permanent removal of hair in areas where the laser hair treatment is applied, according to Baylor Medical College. After approximately six weeks, some of the hair follicles will start growing hair. However, the hair is lighter and finer. For this reason, patients go for several sessions. After three to five sessions, patients see permanent hair loss.
Pre-Treatment
Laser hair removal treatments don't work for everyone. Before going for the procedure, the doctor or licensed practitioner will have a consultation to identify the areas where the patient wants hair removed. White, gray and red hair does not respond well to treatment, so these patients may not see the results desired. Some lasers are inhibited by darker pigments in the skin. Before a patient has the procedure, it's important to avoid the sun and use sunscreen.
Time Frame
Sessions for laser hair removal are short. The time frame for a treatment procedure is dependent on the amount of hair that is removed. Areas such as the lip or chin are small areas, and they can be treated within minutes. Large areas, like the legs and arms, may take up to an hour. Although the procedure doesn't require anesthetics, some doctors will use a topical cream that contains anesthesia to reduce the uncomfortable feeling for the patient.
Side Effects
Laser hair removal has a few side effects, which can occur during and after the procedure, according to Columbia University. Without anesthesia, the procedure feels like prickling in the area. The effects after the procedure include swelling, redness and discolored skin that may last for several days. A cool compress alleviates some of the swelling and redness.
