Gifts for a New Grandma

When a new child is born, so is a grandmother. While the new mom will be showered with gifts and supplies, offering a small gift to the new grandma to celebrate her new role in the baby's life is appropriate. Any new grandma would love a few pictures or a brag book to show off her new family member, but you can also make items or purchase gifts that are an unusual way to give a token of appreciation and recognition.

Generational Locket

A generational locket has several pockets for photos. The new grandma can use them all for her new grandbaby, add pictures of other family members, or use it to present the generations of her family, starting with her and going down to the new baby.

Family Tree

Make a family tree on a large piece of posterboard, or even as a mural on the wall, to show the new grandma the effect she's had on her family. Lightly sketch a tree and trace it over with paint. Take pictures of family members and record their birth dates on the tree. Place the family tree in a prominent place in her home so that she can look at it often.

Recordable Storybook

Not all new grandmas live close enough to their new grandbaby to tuck him in at night and read him a story. But you can purchase a recordable storybook. Grandma reads the story into the speaker while it's recording, and saves the story. Then she can "read" to her grandchild each night before bed. It's a sentimental gift for a long-distance new grandma.

Babysitting Kit

If the new grandma will be babysitting the baby, arm her with a babysitting kit. Fill it with a pair of baby pajamas, diapers, formula if needed, wipes and burp cloths. Then the new grandma always has the right things on hand while watching her grandchild.

Generational Photo

The arrival of a new baby means the extension of a family. Pay for a generational family photo to be taken with the grandma, the parents and the baby. If you also have a great-grandma, do a four-generational picture, if she is well. After having the pictures taken, purchase a large one for the new grandma to hang prominently in her home.
