Foam hair curlers come in two types: foam curlers that look like sticks and bend to secure your hair or foam tubes with a plastic clasp to close the curlers. Whatever the foam curler type, these rollers allow you to achieve a curly hairstyle that is more comfortable for the head and scalp because the foam rollers don't dig into your head when you're sitting or sleeping.
Step 1
Dry your hair--either let it air dry or use a hairdryer--until it is about five minutes away from being fully dry. The hair should be slightly damp, but not wet to the touch. Spray your hair with a setting solution, which will help to hold the curl for longer.
Step 2
Using hair clips, separate your hair into five sections: one on the top, one on each side and two back portions.
Step 3
Loosen one section and part a 1- to 2-inch section of hair. Smooth with a brush or comb.
Step 4
Place the foam hair roller on the section of about 1/2 inch away from the bottom of your hair. Wrap the ends of your hair around the roller, then slowly roll the roller toward the scalp, stopping at about 1/2 inch away from the scalp. For ringlets, hold the curlers vertically while rolling in. For more curled-under curls, hold the curlers horizontally.
Step 5
Secure the roller by either knotting the ends in a pretzel shape (for stick foam rollers) or by snapping the plastic clips in place.
Step 6
Curl the remaining sections of your hair onto rollers. Leave the curlers in for at least 15 minutes--the longer you leave your curlers in, the better.
Step 7
Remove the curlers by loosening the curler clasp or knot, then unrolling the curler away from your face.
Step 8
Set your curls with hair spray, or brush out for a smooth, curled-under look.
Tips and Warnings
- Begin rolling your hair with the bottom back portions of your hair. This hair tends to be thicker and takes longer to dry and curl. As a general rule, the larger the roller, the looser the curl.
- The larger the section of hair, the longer the hair can take to fully dry on the curler. This can result in a looser curl or a curl that does not hold. For best results, use smaller sections.
