Classic Signs of Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition that occurs when your airways become inflamed and constricted. It can cause many symptoms and sideline you from activities you enjoy. While there is currently no cure for this condition it can be managed and controlled. Learning to recognize the symptoms will help you to take steps to prevent a serious attack. In some cases of mild asthma the right treatment plan can eliminate your symptoms all together. If you notice the common signs of this disease see your physician to discuss treatment options. Early treatment can help you to avoid damage to your lungs.

Coughing

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute coughing is one of the most commons signs of asthma. It can be worse in the morning or at night and interfere with your ability to sleep. You may or may not produce mucus or phlegm when you cough. You may also experience a wheezing sound when you try to breathe. In some cases wheezing only happens in response to exercise or if you have a cold.

Shortness of Breath

The American Lung Association states that asthma can also make you feel out of breath. You may have trouble catching your breath or feeling like you are unable to empty your lungs. This can happen on a regular basis or just once in a while. You may also find that only certain activities or triggers cause you to lose your breath.

Chest Discomfort

Another common sign of asthma is chest pain or tightness. You may feel like something is squeezing your chest and limiting your ability to breathe. Cold weather may exacerbate your chest discomfort. Chest tightness can be a sign that you are going to have a flare up. The National Institutes of Health claims that you may notice a sensation that feels like you are pulling or stretching the skin in your ribs when breathing.
