The Daniel Fast is a 21-day fast that encourages participants to practice spiritual discipline by refraining from certain beverages and foods during the three-week period. The fast is based on the biblical story of Daniel, a prophet in the Old Testament. Rather than consume meats and drinks offered to Babylonian gods, the prophet and his followers ascribed to a diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and water. Current followers of the fast eliminate meat, processed foods, sweeteners (organic and artificial), caffeine, baked goods and fried foods. Following a nearly vegan diet, many participants focus on prayer and spirituality during the 21 days. After completion of the fast, participants should ease back into normal eating patterns.

Step 1

Incorporate foods back into your diet slowly, on a one-by-one basis. For example, incorporate meat into one meal during the first day off, rather than having it at all three meals in one day. Don't reintroduce two foods at the same time that you were not allowed to eat while on the fast. Drink milk the next day, rather than at the same meal when you eat meat. Don't rush back into your normal eating patterns to avoid indigestion or getting sick.

Step 2

Start with one source of caffeine and evaluate how your body responds to the stimulant. After 21 days, your body might have a stronger reaction to the caffeine than before you started the fast. Drink one cup of coffee, tea or soda. Switch to decaf (which has trace amounts of caffeine) if caffeine initially gives you the jitters.

Step 3

Hydrate after the fast and drink 64 oz. of water daily. Continue to do this after the fast to prevent dehydration and to provide the body with energy.

Step 4

Expect to feel tired or sluggish after eating processed or heavy foods that were restricted on the diet. Get proper rest, and don't overeat or consume large amounts of processed or high fat foods right after the fast.

Step 5

Retain some of the eating habits you learned while on the fast. Continue to eat whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and healthy oils.
