Fingernails and toenails are made of protein layers. The name of the protein is keratin. Keratin layers grow from under the cuticle at the base of the nail. As these layers grow outward from the base, they become hard, forming the nail and pushing out the rest of the nail. According to the Mayo Clinic, healthy nails are smooth and do not have ridges or grooves. Harmless ridges may develop that run from the tip of the nail to the base, and these may grow more prominent with age. Growing healthy nails can be accomplished with diet and proper care.

Step 1

Eat a healthy diet that includes biotin, which is one of the B vitamins. Biotin can increase the thickness of nails. Diets should also provide sufficient nutritional amounts of iron, protein and zinc. Include sufficient amounts of water daily, which helps keep the body and nails hydrated.

Step 2

Trim nails so that they are short and have a basic square shape. Slightly round the end of the nail. This helps to protect the nail from damage.

Step 3

Wash the nails along with hands when they get dirty and dry them thoroughly. This helps prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi under the nail

Step 4

Watch for problems. The keratin layers that grow out into nails may stay healthy, but sometimes problems develop such as discoloration or infection, which may require the attention of a physician.

Tips and Warnings

  • Help to keep your nails healthy by rubbing in lotion when you moisturize your hands. Nails require moisture, which prevents them from becoming brittle. Nails are easier to trim after taking a bath. The water helps to soften the nails, making them less brittle and easier to trim smoothly.
  • Don't use fingernail polish remover that contains acetone. This ingredient tends to dry the nail, contributing to brittleness. Using fingernails to pry or poke objects may cause damage to the nails.

Things You'll Need
